Full-Length Research Articles report original empirical research that aligns with the aims and scope of Higher Education Inquiry (HEI). Manuscripts should demonstrate a clear theoretical or conceptual framing, methodological rigor, ethical integrity, original findings, and theoretically and/or practically significant implications for higher education and related fields. Articles should normally be between 7,500 and 8,000 words, excluding appendices and supplementary materials.

Critical/Systematic Literature Reviews

Critical/Systematic Literature Reviews critically synthesize existing scholarship to address robust, timely, and relevant questions in higher education and related fields within the scope of Higher Education Inquiry (HEI). Reviews must clearly state and justify their review methodology, demonstrate a transparent and rigorous approach to the identification and analysis of literature, critically evaluate existing knowledge, and generate new conceptual insights, implications, and directions for future research. Manuscripts should normally be between 7,500 and 8,000 words.

Methodological Papers

Methodological Papers present innovative methodological approaches relevant to higher education research and related fields within the scope of Higher Education Inquiry (HEI). Manuscripts should clearly identify the methodological issue being addressed, provide a strong theoretical or conceptual justification, explain procedures transparently, demonstrate methodological coherence and evidence of validity or trustworthiness, and show the practical applicability and contribution of the proposed approach to higher education research. Manuscripts should normally be between 7,500 and 8,000 words.

Practice-Based and Policy Impact Articles

Practice-Based and Policy Impact Articles examine educational practices and/or the effects of higher education policies in one or more contexts, with particular attention to critical analysis, implementation processes, outcomes, challenges, and practical implications. Manuscripts should present evidence-based analysis, critically reflect on successes and limitations, and offer recommendations that are relevant beyond the immediate study context. Cross-national perspectives are encouraged. Manuscripts should normally be between 7,500 and 8,000 words.

Academic Papers

Academic Papers provide concise but analytically and critically developed discussions of contemporary issues, practices, and policy effects in higher education and related fields within the scope of Higher Education Inquiry (HEI). Manuscripts should engage critically with relevant scholarship, present a coherent and original argument, and clearly articulate theoretical and practical implications. Authors’ critical evaluations and perspectives should contribute meaningfully to current academic debates. Manuscripts should normally be between 5,000 and 5,500 words.
